Annette Fernando is a London based artist of French, Italian and Sri Lankan heritage. Her work looks at the representation of people in everyday situations, including the representation of women and sensuality in cinema across the last century. The manipulation of time is a vital element in her work; she slows down film, freezing frames, and selects out of 24 frames per second, a frame to paint. Painting is a long laborious process, being a further manipulation of time. A fraction of a second stretched further with hours of rendering. By selecting one single frame, she exposes it and draws it into attention, making the viewer re-engage and rethink moments so easily taken for granted.
