British artist, Faye Bridgwater grew up in Watford, England. She found her passion for art while studying sculpture at the city of Sheffield. Today, she lives and works in Brighton and Hove, a coastal town in East Sussex, where she is immersed in the town’s lively art scene. Although she has a close relationship with sculpture, her work mainly revolves around painting abstract representations of the everyday landscapes that surround her.
She captures the majestic tall white cliffs of Brighton as well as the graceful hills of the South Downs, with powerful brushstrokes and dramatic choices of colour. At first, her paintings appear to have a strong presence, yet once one looks at them, one can experience their almost gentile and playful components, which brings one to experience a range of calming, yet exciting emotions. Throughout the process of painting, she uses unique tools she finds during her walks on the beach, such as fisherman’s knots and driftwoods, seagulls’ feathers or bottle tops, which she later uses as paintbrushes or pens to print onto her paintings. Such process allows her paintings to obtain a closer and more organic relationship to the landscape they are representing.
Faye Bridgwater’s beautifully rendered work has been showcased all over the world, giving her important international recognition as an influential icon inside the art world. She was part of the 159th annual exhibition from the Society of women artists’ in London this past September, a worldwide recognized exhibition, where only the most influential contemporary women artists of today are invited to share their work. In addition, she has won two highly noticeable awards (the Derwent art award from the People’s choice Awards, and the John Purcell award from the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours) giving her and her work their much deserved recognition. The timelessness of her paintings will endure throughout generations, and her work remains and will remain influential to present and future artists throughout the years to come. Bridgewater continues to amaze us with her new collections, and we are excited to see her new summer collection, being showcased at the Brighton Artists Open Houses this coming June.
