Sukey Sleeper is a painter living and working in London, currently participating on the Turps Studio Programme. Sukey's recent paintings are predominantly concerned with 'edgelands', urban wildlife and what it means to contemplate ‘nature’ in the contemporary city.
Sukey is particularly interested in bodies of water - From the riverside and canals to the reservoirs, ponds and sodden wetlands at the margins of the city, these are the places where a uniquely London wildlife has adapted to scavenging through layers of discarded detritus.
"I routinely make drawings while exploring these places, which I take back to the studio and intuitively work into further drawings, paintings and collages. By allowing forms to mutate and transform into imagined occurrences, I draw on storytelling and myth to explore the collision of human and animal habitats."
